What caregiving actually costs — and where the money help hides
Nobody bills you for becoming a caregiver. The costs arrive sideways: groceries for two households, gas to appointments, the supplement drinks, the co-pays, the hours cut back at work. Ask a caregiver what it costs and the honest answer is "I stopped counting." This post is about counting — because most of the help that exists goes unclaimed simply because nobody knew it existed.
Where the money actually goes
Caregivers consistently report out-of-pocket spending on household items, medical costs insurance doesn't cover, home modifications, and travel — commonly amounting to thousands of dollars a year. But the bigger cost is usually invisible: reduced work hours, passed-over promotions, and early exits from the workforce, which quietly drain wages now and retirement later. The unpaid care itself? The help most people never claim
- Getting paid to caregive. In many states, Medicaid programs can pay family members for care they already provide. Not a fortune — but real money for real work. How it works.
- State paid leave. If your state runs a paid family leave program, caregiving leave can come with partial wage replacement. You've likely been paying in without knowing. Check yours.
- Tax relief. If you cover more than half their living costs, they may count as your dependent — unlocking credits and letting you deduct qualifying medical expenses. The caregiver tax guide.

Why people don't claim it
Three reasons, every time: they didn't know it existed, the application looked overwhelming, or someone said "you probably won't qualify" — a sentence that has cost families more money than any denial letter ever did. Let the program say no. That's its job, not yours.
